More About Lake Tahoe Airport
The South Lake Tahoe Airport, also known as Lake Tahoe Airport, use to serve the Lake Tahoe, California airport until it stopped operating commercial flights in the early 2000's. Before it closed, the South Lake Tahoe Airport had 13 airlines flying to various cities in California and Nevada. The airport is a few miles from Lake Tahoe and featured only one runway. The main airlines flying out of South Lake Tahoe Airport were American Airlines, Tahoe Air, Allegiant Air and Wings West Airlines. These airlines primary flew to the cities of Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and Las Vegas. Flights from other airlines to Oakland, Fresno, San Diego and Reno were also available at the South Lake Tahoe Airport.
Around the year 2000, South Lake Tahoe Airport was the home of both Tahoe Air and Allegiant Air. The airport was unable to handle being a hub for two large airlines because of the small size of the airport. Airport officials decided to end operations with Allegiant Air, and keep Tahoe Air. This was suppose to limit the air traffic to a manageable level. South Lake Tahoe Airport was forced to close after Tahoe Air went out of business. The downturn in the air industry in the early 2000's force Tahoe Air to cease operations. With no major airlines using the airport, South Lake Tahoe Airport was force to close. There is still no airport servicing the city of Lake Tahoe, California. The closest airport is the Reno-Tahoe International Airport which is located in the city of Reno, Nevada.
The South Lake Tahoe Airport is still being used, but does not operate commercial flights. There is currently a flight school and a helicopter service using the airport. The Lake Tahoe Flight School uses the South Lake Tahoe Airport for all of its training. Helitahoe Helicopter Services also calls South Lake Tahoe Airport home. They offer scenic tours of the lake and a helicopter flight school. Locals that own airplanes can also store their plane at one of the hangars at the South Lake Tahoe Airport. Pilot supplies and airplane fuel are also available for anyone to purchase.
