Truckee-Tahoe Airport Hotels
The Truckee Tahoe Airport is situated on the outskirts of the quaint and historical town of Truckee, California, and is one of a handful of small airports near Lake Tahoe and Reno Tahoe International Airport. The Truckee Tahoe airport is also a quick jaunt from San Francisco International Airport, so visitors can enjoy a pleasant trip to our point in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
More About Truckee-Tahoe Airport
The Truckee-Tahoe Airport is located two miles from the city of Truckee, California. Located between California and Nevada, the airport is a general aviation facility, which means aircraft designated for purposes other than military or commercial can land on the property. General aircraft include private, police and medical vehicles. In a somewhat unusual decision, Truckee-Tahoe was issued different identifying codes by the Federal Aviation Administration and the International Air Transport Association.
Local business owners formed the Truckee-Tahoe Airport District in the 1950s. The group used their resources to secure funding for runway construction and obtain surrounding buildings. Originally meant to increase local tourism, the airport became a hub for aircraft used in law enforcement and fire spotting patrols. Standing at an elevation of 5,900 feet, the airport is spread over 989 acres. Runways are asphalt paved. There are 210 spaces for aircraft parking, and minimal fees are charged for overnight stays. Truckee Tahoe does not charge landing fees.
Approximately 35,000 take-off and landing occur at Truckee-Tahoe per year. Most activity occurs between late June and late September, the start of Reno Air Races. Crowds are seen again between December and March for ski season.
Landings and takeoffs are permitted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pilots are asked to comply with a voluntary curfew, designating 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. as quiet hours. Airport attendants are available from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. Ramp services are available between the hours of 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Snow removal is conducted round-the-clock. Fixed base operators provide pre-heating services and aircraft maintenance.
Pilots working out of Truckee-Tahoe speak to students and other individuals regarding aviation. Aspiring pilots can purchase flying lessons. Aerial tours of Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada provide a more relaxing adventure. The cuisine at Amy’s Deli comes highly recommended. The venue offers exquisite views of arrivals and departures.
The airport has seen increased activity with the emergence of North Lake Tahoe as a world-class destination. The area offers snowboarding and golfing in addition to skiing. North Lake Tahoe is also considered a popular wedding destination.
